Every year, several hundred lean devotees make a pilgrimage to one U.S. city or another for an annual conference on lean manufacturing hosted by the Portland, Oregon-based training and consulting firm Productivity, Inc. They go to two days of hands-on lean manufacturing workshops, followed by two days of speeches to help them better grasp this whole "lean" thing.
